Traveling and exploring on a motorcycle: Edwin (Cyanate81) shares his experience

Unique perspective on the world

One of the biggest benefits of exploring on a motorcycle is the sense of freedom it provides. Unlike traveling by car or bus, motorcycle riders are not confined to main roads and highways. They can venture off the beaten path onto dirt roads and trails, exploring where few others have gone before. This sense of freedom and exploration is what draws many riders to the world of motorcycle traveling.

 

Another benefit of motorcycle traveling is the opportunity to experience new cultures and communities in a more intimate way. Riders can stop and interact with locals, sample the local cuisine, and learn about the customs and traditions of the places they visit. This kind of cultural exchange is often more meaningful and authentic than the typical tourist experience.

 

Of course, motorcycle exploring also comes with its share of challenges and risks. Riders need to be prepared for rough terrain, inclement weather, and mechanical issues with their bikes. They also need to be aware of local laws and customs, and take precautions to ensure their safety while traveling in unfamiliar territories.

 

Despite these challenges, the rewards of motorcycle exploring and travel are vast. It offers a unique perspective on the world – one that is not limited by roads, maps, or typical tourist destinations. It allows travelers to connect with and learn from people of different cultures, and to experience the world in a more authentic and meaningful way.

Destinations in Europe

Motorcycle traveling and exploring in, for example, the Netherlands, Germany, and Italy is an exhilarating experience that offers a unique perspective on these picturesque countries. Like me, riders can enjoy the freedom of the open road while experiencing the rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscapes of Europe. I’ve chosen to use the Ducati Multistrada 1260 Pikes Peak to not only commute and use it for leisure riding, the bike was purchased with the purpose of traveling more and going on longer trips. To use it for what it’s meant for. I haven’t really been camping whilst away on the bike yet, I prefer to book comfortable hotels to optimize relaxation and have a more luxurious experience.

 

In the Netherlands, travelers can easily explore the charming villages and lush countryside, while taking in the historic architecture and fascinating museums. Riding through the winding roads and scenic coastal routes of the Netherlands leaves lasting memories. As I live in the Netherlands I know these roads really well. You can find yourself in a whole different setting in a few hours as distances are short and connections are excellent. The coastal area, the Veluwe and Limburg (in the south) all make a perfect setting to enjoy a weekend away.

 

Germany is renowned for its incredible ‘Autobahns’, which offer unrivaled speed and flexibility for motorcycle lovers. Along with exhilarating high-speed rides, Germany also boasts some of the most picturesque landscapes in Europe, including the stunning Black Forest and the Bavarian Alps. Besides, Germans are very open and welcoming, and they surely know their cuisine to enjoy after a long day's ride.

 

Italy is a biker's paradise with its winding hillside roads, coastal routes, and breathtaking mountain passes. Besides, it’s the cradle of motorsport with brands like Ferrari, Aprilia and Ducati amongst many others. The country is home to many iconic landmarks, including the Tower of Pisa, the Colosseum in Rome, and the canals of Venice, all of which can be experienced on a thrilling ride through the Italian countryside. The Ducati Museum in Bologna, Modena and the Enzo Ferrari museum are really worth visiting. While at it, a visit to the tracks of Mugello, Misano and Imola are really great. Italians are very proud of their country, their lovely cuisine and their heritage, and rightly so. To me, it’s a dream destination on my bike.

 

Ducati Multistrada

I discovered that traveling and exploring these countries on a Ducati Multistrada 1260 is an unforgettable experience. With its speed, agility, and versatility, the Multistrada is the perfect motorcycle for those seeking adventure and exploration. The Netherlands, Germany, and Italy are all stunning destinations, each offering its own unique cultural experience, spectacular scenery, and exciting riding opportunities.

Prepare properly

To embark on a successful long-distance motorcycle trip, it's essential to prepare yourself and your motorcycle properly for a trip through diverse climates, cultures, and road conditions. The essential gear and equipment needed for long-distance motorcycle trips in any country generally depend on the area and weather conditions. Riders must prepare and pack according to the journey, the trip's duration and destination, so they can avoid any potential issues during the journey. I’d like to give you some suggestions.

 

1. Motorcycle
   A reliable and comfortable motorcycle with good mileage and maintenance is necessary. Get your motorcycle serviced and checked before leaving. Make sure it’s in good shape before hitting the road. Get a tune-up, oil change, tire check, and brake inspection. Ensure all the essential systems like brakes, lights, and suspension are working correctly. If you are not sure how to do it yourself, it would be best to get it checked by a professional mechanic.
2. Riding gear
   Invest in high-quality riding gear. You will need the proper gear to ride through different weather conditions. Also, pack some additional layers like rain gear, a thermal jacket, and warm gloves, especially if you are traveling to colder regions. I’ve chosen the Spidi Allroud H2O out jackets and trousers, combined with sturdy gore tex line boots from Dainese and Rev’it Sand 4 H2O gloves. Angela, my partner, uses the Alpinestars Stella Andes V3 jacket and trousers combined with Dainese Nexus lady boots. With this gear, we’re ready for rain, cold and warmth. For longer trips we like to wear the Shoei Xspirit 3 and NXR2.
3. Planning
   Plan your route before you leave and research the region(s) you will be traveling in. Look for potential challenges like rough roads, steep inclines, or extreme weather conditions. Also, check the location of gas stations and workshops. If possible, connect with local riders who can offer advice and tips.
4. Navigation
   A navigation-system or an old school map is useful to ensure you don't get lost on unfamiliar roads. We simply use Google Maps.
5. Communication
   A mobile phone with international roaming or a satellite phone is ideal to stay connected. For intercommunication a high quality comm-set like Cardo is perfect. It’s safer and way more fun to be able to talk to each other whilst on the bike.
6. Luggage
   Pack efficiently. When traveling on a motorcycle, space is limited. Only pack the essentials, and try to keep it light. Motorcycle panniers are perfect for carrying clothing, while a good backpack gives extra flexibility for carrying essentials.
7. Powerbank
   It is important to carry a powerbank to keep mobile phones and other devices charged throughout the trip. Or, simply install a charging device on your bike. Most touring and allroads are already equipped with USB outlets to accommodate this. If not, I highly recommend SP connect.
8. Protective covers
   Dust, rain, and harsh weather can damage your motorcycle. Therefore, it is best to carry protective covers.
9. First aid kit
   It’s always advisable to bring a first aid kit, including plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, insect repellent, and pain relievers. And don’t forget a first aid kit for your bike! A basic toolkit could be a real savior when you have problems with your bike. Maybe even bring some spare parts like spark plugs, fuses and oil filters, if you have any room to spare.
10. Important documents
    It’s wise to make copies of essential documents like passport, visa, driving license and registration papers. Keep them safe and secure in your luggage, and have a digital copy on a cloud server that can be accessed remotely.
11. Hydration
    Riding for long hours can be exhausting. Make sure you keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water, taking frequent breaks, and carrying snacks.
12. Back-up plan
    Always have a back-up plan in case of emergencies like breakdowns, accidents, or unfavorable weather conditions.

 

By following these tips, you can prepare yourself and your motorcycle for extended travel, making your travel experience both safe and enjoyable.
